On December 6–7, a planning workshop of the Transregional Collaboratory on the Indian Ocean took place in Beirut, Lebanon, hosted by our partners at the Arab Council for the Social Sciences. The workshop brought together eight regional experts representing institutions across Africa, Asia, the US, and the UK, and the disciplines of history, economics, anthropology, sociology, geography, and political science. Discussions were further informed by generous written contributions from scholars who could not be in attendance. Effectiveness of Peace Operations Network (EPON) – Annual Meeting and Seminar

On 13-14 November 2019, UVC Director Tatiana Carayannis and Senior Program Manager Aaron Pangburn participated in the Annual Meeting of the Effectiveness of Peace Operations Network (EPON). The first day served as an opportunity to report on network activities, tweak the common methodology for the research studies, and brainstorm potential new missions for 2020 site visits. On Thursday, 14 November, at the International Peace Institute, various EPON researchers briefed New York-based policy makers and United Nations practitioners on the findings and lessons from EPON case studies to date, as well as on the progress of the studies underway and future plans. …

5th Annual CPPF-DPA MENA RC Forum (Geneva)

On 16-18 December, CPPF co-hosted its Sixth Annual Middle East and North Africa UN Resident Coordinators’ Forum in Geneva. The annual forum, the first to take place under the new United Nations Reform of 2019 brought together the MENA region’s Resident Coordinators, representatives from other parts of the UN system, and external academic experts to examine the challenges facing the MENA region and to brainstorm new entry points and opportunities for the UN.

On 27 January, CPPF organized an expert brainstorming on Chad and the Region. The meeting assessed recent developments in the region and explored opportunities for enhancing cross-border coordination of UN conflict prevention activities in Chad’s border areas.

Research Workshop on Disinformation, Democratic Processes, and Conflict Prevention

On January 30, 2020, the SSRC convened the second research workshop of its Academic Network on Peace, Security, and the United Nations in New York, an initiative of the Council's Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum (CPPF) and its Understanding Violent Conflict (UVC) Program. This workshop, on “Disinformation, Democratic Processes, and Conflict Prevention,” examined the frameworks, findings, and debates in emerging scholarship on information disorder and the linkages between disinformation, elections, hate speech, and identity-based violence.
