The African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa (Next Gen) program held a week-long joint workshop in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for the 2019 cohort of APN Individual Research Grant (IRG) recipients and the 2019 cohort of Next Gen fellows. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the University Dar es Salaam from December 9th to 14th, 2019. 15 APN Individual Research Grant participants benefited from lectures, working group sessions, and one-on-one dialogues with experienced facilitators, including senior scholars, and current and former APN Advisory Board members. Effectiveness of Peace Operations Network (EPON) – Annual Meeting and Seminar

On 13-14 November 2019, UVC Director Tatiana Carayannis and Senior Program Manager Aaron Pangburn participated in the Annual Meeting of the Effectiveness of Peace Operations Network (EPON). The first day served as an opportunity to report on network activities, tweak the common methodology for the research studies, and brainstorm potential new missions for 2020 site visits. On Thursday, 14 November, at the International Peace Institute, various EPON researchers briefed New York-based policy makers and United Nations practitioners on the findings and lessons from EPON case studies to date, as well as on the progress of the studies underway and future plans. …

5th Annual CPPF-DPA MENA RC Forum (Geneva)

On 16-18 December, CPPF co-hosted its Sixth Annual Middle East and North Africa UN Resident Coordinators’ Forum in Geneva. The annual forum, the first to take place under the new United Nations Reform of 2019 brought together the MENA region’s Resident Coordinators, representatives from other parts of the UN system, and external academic experts to examine the challenges facing the MENA region and to brainstorm new entry points and opportunities for the UN.

On 13-14 January, CPPF convened an expert brainstorming on the impact of sanctions and human rights. The brainstorming analyzed the debate surrounding the nexus of sanctions and human rights to better inform the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights understanding and guidance in the field and at its headquarters.

On 27 January, CPPF organized an expert brainstorming on Chad and the Region. The meeting assessed recent developments in the region and explored opportunities for enhancing cross-border coordination of UN conflict prevention activities in Chad’s border areas.

Research Workshop on Disinformation, Democratic Processes, and Conflict Prevention

On January 30, 2020, the SSRC convened the second research workshop of its Academic Network on Peace, Security, and the United Nations in New York, an initiative of the Council's Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum (CPPF) and its Understanding Violent Conflict (UVC) Program. This workshop, on “Disinformation, Democratic Processes, and Conflict Prevention,” examined the frameworks, findings, and debates in emerging scholarship on information disorder and the linkages between disinformation, elections, hate speech, and identity-based violence.
