The SSRC Supports the National Vietnam Encyclopedia Project to Gain Experience from US Encyclopedia Projects

The SSRC’s Vietnam Program organized a study tour in the US for a delegation from the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), with the National Vietnam Encyclopedia Project. The project, which began in 2014, sets out to publish a 36-volume national encyclopedia, ranging in topic from society and culture to science and technology. The project expects to mobilize more than 600 scientists and scholars in Vietnam and around the world. SSRC-IFS Conference: “Democracy and Future Generations”

https://www.iffs.se/en/research/research-projects/anxieties-of-democracy/   This workshop, held in Stockholm, Sweden, was the second convening organized as part of a collaboration between the SSRC’s Anxieties of Democracy program and our namesake Swedish partner program, The Anxieties of Democracy Program. The workshop provided an opportunity for American and European scholars to present research that addressed the ability of democratic polities and institutions to ensure protections and resources for future generations. The workshop was generously supported by the Swedish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences and the Institute for Future Studies.

Climate Change Working Group Meeting 2017

The working group on climate change seeks to make the study of climate change a distinct and recognized area of study in the social sciences. Its steering committee convened to discuss several meetings and events: a workshop on diplomatic methods to encourage mitigation activity, a conference at Stanford on the comparative politics of climate change, and a conference at Princeton on the ethical responsibilities of professionals who witness climate change. Renowned scholar, author and political theorist Danielle Allen concluded her activities as the 2017 Democracy Fellow of the SSRC’s Anxieties of Democracy program last week with a public lecture in New York City. Professor Allen presented a powerful, provocative lecture on political equality to a capacity audience at the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College Nov. 16, followed by a response from NYU Law professor Jeremy Waldron. The Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity in Southeast Asia, one of four Atlantic Fellows programs that have partnered with the SSRC for strategic learning and assessment and developmental support, recently graduated 18 fellows from 9 ASEAN countries and China at the fellowship’s second Annual Forum in Hua Hin, Thailand. Throughout the six module induction year program, the fellows have developed their leadership capabilities and tackled issues related to health equity and its social determinants both within and beyond national borders. Distribution Conference

On February 9th, 2018, the Anxieties of Democracy program’s working group on distribution convened at Yale University. The conference brought our working group members together to explore how changes in the structure of the global economy affect the viability of long settled features of distribution. The conference was organized by the working group’s co-chairs: Frances Rosenbluth, Damon Wells Professor of Political Science at Yale University, and Margaret Weir, Wilson Professor of International and Public Affairs and Political Science at Brown University. Opportunity Youth San Diego Webinar

Kristen Lewis participated in "New Data on Youth Disconnection: State of Opportunity Youth in San Diego County," a webinar unveiling the latest numbers on disconnected youth in San Diego calculated by Measure of America. The data is part of a collaboration between the San Diego Workforce Partnership and Measure of America to assess youth disconnection, set goals and track progress in the county. National Reengagement Plus! Convening

Co-director Kristen Lewis will speak about Measure of America’s latest disconnected youth research at the Philadelphia Youth Network’s sixth National Reengagement Plus! Convening.
