China-Africa Peace and Security Fellows, NY Workshops

The Social Science Research Council welcomed the cohort of China-Africa Peace and Security Research Fellows, an initiative of the SSRC’s China-Africa Knowledge Project (CAKP) for a two-day event in New York on February 13-14, 2017. The CAKP is funded by the Henry Luce Foundation. The fellowship program is a collaboration of and based on contributions from the SSRC’s African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum (CPPF), and the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). Alternatives to Incarceration in Latin America and the Caribbean

Drug laws and the region’s untenable prison crisis are at the center of the drug policy debate in Latin America and the Caribbean. The incarceration of low-level drug offenders for exceptionally long sentences has left the region’s prisons bursting at the seams; the impact is not only felt by those incarcerated, but also by their families and communities. Cutting edge research by the Colectivo de Estudios Drogas y Derecho (Research Consortium on Drugs and the Law, CEDD) and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) sheds new light on the problem and efforts to address it through alternatives to incarceration. “Opening Doors for Youth” hosted by Rep. Bobby Scott

Congressman Bobby Scott will host "Opening Doors for Youth: Investments in Employment Opportunities for Opportunity Youth Are Investments in Our Communities and Our Nation", a discussion with youth, community leaders, advocates, and experts about the Opening Doors for Youth Act, which would expand federal investment to maintain youth connected to school and work. Measure of America co-director Kristen Lewis will participate as a panelist and discuss the latest data and findings on youth disconnection.

Webinar: Moving the Needle on Youth Disconnection

Measure of America and the National League of Cities Institute for Youth, Education, and Families will host a joint webinar on MOA’s latest youth disconnection report. The expert panel in “Moving the Needle on Youth Disconnection: Insights from Measure of America’s New Report: ‘Promising Gains, Persistent Gaps: Youth Disconnection in America’” will feature MOA co-directors Sarah Burd-Sharps and Kristen Lewis, as well as NLC YEF Institute’s Director of Youth and Young Adult Connections, Andrew Moore. SSRC-IFS Workshop: “Performance of Democracies”

https://www.bsg.ox.ac.uk/news/democracy-retreat-anxieties-democracy-programme   This workshop, held at Oxford University’s Blavatnik School of Government, was the first in a series of convening's organized as part of a collaboration between the SSRC’s Anxieties of Democracy program and our namesake Swedish partner program, The Anxieties of Democracy Program. The workshop addressed the question of democratic performance, and why democracies are sometimes outperformed by autocracies. Topics included political legitimacy, socio-economic inequality, control of corruption, and sustainable public finances. The workshop was generously supported by the Swedish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences and the Institute for Future Studies.

SSRC and VASS Workshop on Developing Policy-oriented Presentations

On July 14-16, 2017, SSRC Vietnam Program staff organized a workshop on developing policy-oriented presentations, in which the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) - SSRC research team participated. This was the final workshop of the longitudinal “Vietnam Population Health Study in Three Provinces.” The study is meant to measure the results of the Atlantic Philanthropies' comprehensive programming aimed at improving the commune health center (CHC) system in rural areas. The project goals include an assessment of how well the CHC model and its components work for different populations, particularly the disadvantaged, and an examination of change over time with …

Policy Roundtable: “Improving the Quality of Health Care at the Grassroots Level in Viet Nam”

Professor Hy Van Luong presents key findings and policy recommendations from the Population Health Study. On July 18, 2017, SSRC Vietnam Program staff organized a Policy Roundtable to engage stakeholders in the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS)-SSRC logitudinal "Population Health Study in Three Provinces" and highlight key findings and policy recommendations from the study.
