2016 Democracy Seminar with Professor Charles Taylor

As part of his residency with us in 2016, Professor Charles Taylor, the Anxieties of Democracy program’s second Democracy Fellow, led a two-part Seminar on current 'anxieties of democracy’. Twelve doctoral students, from diverse disciplines and universities, competed for a spot at the table. Working Group on Institutions Conference

On October 28-29, 2016, the Anxieties of Democracy program’s Working Group on Institutions convened its first conference at Princeton University. The conference was generously sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School for Public and International Affairs’ Center for the Study of Democratic Politics and Princeton University’s Department of Politics. The conference brought our Working Group on Institutions’ members into conversation with a diverse array of young scholars and experts, who presented new research and together tested the Working Group’s principal axes of investigation regarding the capacity and performance of democratic institutions. New York City Council Hearing on Disconnected Youth

Measure of America codirector Sarah Burd-Sharps was asked to give expert testimony to the New York City Council’s Committee on Youth Services' Task Force on Out of School, Out of Work Youth on November 22. Burd-Sharps apprised committee members of the key research data on disconnected youth, and discussed with the members the ramifications, potential and extant, of the disengagement of young people in the City. APN Training Workshop II on Writing and Dissemination

The African Peacebuilding Network (APN), in collaboration with the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Makerere University, held its second training workshop for the program’s 2016 cohort of individual research grantees at the Lake Victoria Serena Resort in Kampala, Uganda, on December 14-16, 2016. The workshop focused on the writing and dissemination of grantees’ research findings following six months of APN-supported field-based research projects. Combining lectures, working group sessions, and one-on-one dialogues with mentors who are also well-published experts in the field of peacebuilding, grantees were able to engage with each other, network, and get constructive feedback on their …

Alternatives to Incarceration in Latin America and the Caribbean

Drug laws and the region’s untenable prison crisis are at the center of the drug policy debate in Latin America and the Caribbean. The incarceration of low-level drug offenders for exceptionally long sentences has left the region’s prisons bursting at the seams; the impact is not only felt by those incarcerated, but also by their families and communities. Cutting edge research by the Colectivo de Estudios Drogas y Derecho (Research Consortium on Drugs and the Law, CEDD) and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) sheds new light on the problem and efforts to address it through alternatives to incarceration. Measure of America and the National League of Cities Institute for Youth, Education, and Families will host a joint webinar on MOA’s latest youth disconnection report.
